Threats from extremists as Egypt slides into turmoil
July 9, 2013
Egypt slid deeper into turmoil last night as rival factions massed in the capital, Islamic extremists warned that they were planning attacks and Russia said that the country was heading towards civil war.
Islamist supporters of the ousted President Morsi took to the streets in nationwide protests against what they insist was a military coup.
Thousands gathered at Islamist strongholds in the capital, threatening to march on central Cairo in an attempt to reach Tahrir Square, the hub of mass protests against Mr Morsi’s rule and of the revolution that deposed President Mubarak two years ago.
