Army warns Morsi to make peace with rivals as fears of protest violence grow
June 24, 2013
Egypt’s Army warned the Government and its rivals last night that it would not stand by if rallies planned over the next week descend into violence – and it urged them to forge a consensus.
In one of the most direct interventions by the military since it handed power to President Morsi and a civilian administration a year ago after elections, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Defence Minister and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, said he would not allow an “attack on the will of the people” and added: “There is a state of division in society and the continuation of it is a danger to the Egyptian state and there must be consensus.”
