Egypt tourism boss resigns over governor’s terror links
June 21, 2013
Egypt’s Tourism Minister has resigned after the country’s Islamist President appointed as governor of Luxor a member of the group blamed for the massacre of 58 tourists there in 1997.
Adel Mohamed al-Khayat is a member of Gamaa Islamiya, which committed one of the bloodiest terror attacks in Egypt, though the hardline Salafi group says it has since renounced violence.
His appointment, by President Morsi, triggered protests in Luxor and the resignation yesterday of Hisham Zaazou. His spokeswoman confirmed that he would not work, “as long as the new governor remains in his post, greatly harming tourism in Egypt”.
