Death sentence for Briton in Egypt
June 4, 2013
A British sailor has been sentenced to death in Egypt for being part of an international drug smuggling gang that attempted to import three tons of cannabis into the country.
Charles Raymond Ferndale, 74, was one of five people handed the death penalty yesterday by the Hurghada Criminal Court near the Red Sea.
Four of the defendants were arrested on a ship in 2011 while in the process of smuggling the drugs into Egypt via its southeastern coast. The fifth person managed to flee the scene and was sentenced to death in absentia.
