Pope Francis to visit Egypt in sign of reconciliation
May 20, 2013
Pope Francis has accepted an invitation from the Coptic Pope Tawadros II to visit Egypt. It will be the first time since John Paul II travelled to Cairo in 2000.
Although no date has been set, the visit is significant because Christians in Egypt are suffering from a growing number of attacks since the 2011 revolution. Thousands are reported to have fled the country amid growing hostility and sectarian violence.
“The significance would be great because it would show he is fully-hearted with the Christians of Egypt and the Middle East,” said the Vatican’s Media Advisor in Cairo Father Rafiq Greiche.
